Judge sets trial date for former officers accused in 2023 deadly shooting of woman suffering mental health episode

The three former SAPD officers are accused of shooting and killing Melissa Perez in June of 2023. A judge has set their trial for late September.

SAN ANTONIO — The trial date has been set for three former San Antonio Police officers charged in a deadly shooting of a woman who was reportedly suffering from a mental health episode in June 2023.

Eleazar Alejandro, Nathaniel Villalobos and Alfred Flores are accused of shooting and killing 46-year-old Melissa Perez in her apartment.

In a hearing Monday, Judge Stephanie R. Boyd set the trial date for next month in the Bexar County 187th District Court.

Jury selection begins September 20 and testimony is set to begin September 24.

Perez's family said she was having a mental health crisis when she was shot and killed by the officers.

Body camera footage showed one of the officers jumping onto Perez’s patio and trying to get in through a window. She is seen throwing a hammer at the window. When Perez threw the hammer a second time, the three officers opened fire and killed her.

Two of the former officers, Flores and Alejandro, are charged with murder while Villalobos is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

At the time of the 2023 shooting, the San Antonio police chief said the use of deadly force was not reasonable.

Since the shooting, the officers have been on indefinite suspension without pay.

Flores, Alejandro, and Villalobos are being tried together and can face 5 to 99 years in prison.
