Trial of suspect accused of killing K9 Chucky winds down

Matthew Mireles is accused of leading BCSO deputies on a chase before shooting, and killing the K9.

SAN ANTONIO — The trial of Matthew Mireles, who is accused of leading the Bexar County Sheriff's Office on a chase before shooting and killing a K9 officer named Chucky in 2019 could go into closing arguments soon. 

Mireles is accused of several counts of aggravated assault of a police officer, evading arrest and felon in possession of a firerarm.

The multi-county pursuit back in January of 2019, began in Karnes County, and ended with Mireles walking around on Loop 1604.

BCSO says that’s when Mireles pointed a gun at officers before firing.

K9 Chucky, a five-year-old Belgian Mallinois was let lose to try to subdue Mireles, but the K9 officer wasn’t wearing protective gear at the time.

A report found the dog had died from a single gunshot wound to the thorax, which is essentially the dog’s chest.

The report also suggests the K9 was shot at close range and from behind.

Monday, DPS trooper Daniel Gonzales on the stand to testify. He said Mireles shot in the direction of Chucky and he wasn’t sure if Mireles hit Chucky but when officers fired back at Mireles, he was hit. When they approached the defendant, he was hit by police gun fire and that’s when they saw Chucky was hit. Deputies administered first aid to Mireles.

The trial is winding down and closing arguments could begin soon.
