HOUSTON — Part of Hope Ngumezi’s southwest Houston home is now boarded up after a vehicle crashed into it Thursday night.
“It felt like it was an earthquake or explosion and then, you know, my house starts shaking. And then from there, I just jumped up,” said Hope Ngumezi.
Ngumezi said he went straight to his kid’s room.
“A big white, work truck inside my kid's room,” said Ngumezi. “So, from there, you know, my first reaction was to get my kids out.”
He said the truck was right next to his 4-year-old and 6-year-old's beds.
“My oldest sleeps here and my youngest sleeps right here,” said Ngumezi. “So, when I squeezed between the door, I was able to come right here and I grabbed my first son and I was able to come over and grab my second son and exit the room.”
Once he got the boys out of the home, he said the driver left.
“I heard him. Just sped off and he left,” said Ngumezi.
Thankfully both boys are okay. Ngumezi said they slept through it all.
“Which is unusual because my littlest son doesn’t sleep heavily, but that night he was sleeping heavy,” said Ngumezi. “You know lost my wife last year, but I always believe she's our guardian angel and she was here that night.”
Glass, toys and books are still scattered all around the room, but a family picture with Ngmuezi’s wife in it is still on the wall next to the boy’s bed.
“Even with this big, massive truck in my kid's room and in my room, it's stayed up,” said Ngumezi.
Pictures on the wall that the truck drove through are also still up.
Ngumezi said it’s difficult to look at the damage he’s left to clean up without his wife.
“I don't know where to start from. She’d be the one to help, you know, get it started,” said Ngumezi. “It's just one of those times where you kind of feel alone.”
He’s hoping the person responsible is found soon.
“We're trying to heal as a family and then you came and brought more, destruction in my family,” said Ngumezi.
Ngumezi said he’s thankful that he was not in his room at the time of the crash because he would’ve been barricaded inside of it.
The door to his room is still difficult to open days after the crash and part of his room was also damaged. This situation has left him feeling a bit uneasy but he’s staying positive through it all.
