SAN ANTONIO — Two young men are in custody after San Antonio police said they robbed a jewelry store at Rolling Oaks Mall Thursday afternoon, then fled on foot for hours.
The robbery happened around 2:30 p.m. A sergeant on scene said the two men ran into a wooded area across from the mall near the access road on 1604 and next to a neighborhood.
A caller reported the two and police were able to catch one of the suspects before sundown.
The other suspect ran throughout the neighborhood nearby. By 6 p.m., police spotted the man in the backyard of home off Obbligato Lane.
Mary Guillen lives across the street and said this type of activity is out of the norm for their community.
“It scares me a little bit because I live here alone with five children,” Guillen said.
Nathan Strong said he let police into his backyard to help search for the men.
“Like if they didn’t catch them, or if they weren’t able to get back there to catch them then I don’t want to have to take the law into my own hands if they were to come into my backyard and put in any kind of threat to my family,” Strong said.
Strong, along with other neighbors said they were confident police would catch them but wanted to do what they could to make sure that happened.
“This is our neighborhood, we want to be safe, we want to feel safe here, so whatever we can do to help, that’s what’s important,” Strong said.
