SAN ANTONIO — University Health announced a new president and CEO Tuesday following a five-month recruiting process, according to a press release.
Edward Banos, University Health executive president and chief operating officer accepted the new role following a unanimous vote by the Bexar County Hospital District Board of Managers.
The recruitment process took about 5-months and immediately began after long-standing president and CEO George Hernandez Jr. announced his plans to retire after 19 years.
“The Board of Managers has made an outstanding decision. Ed has a deep understanding of our organization, a passion for our mission and the vision to take University Health to even greater heights,” Hernández said. “I am truly excited for Ed and know I am leaving our mission and our future in excellent hands.”
Bexar County Hospital District Board of Managers Chair James Adams said he is excited for this new chapter and understands the importance of finding a fit for University Health ahead of the two new hospitals set to open in 2027.
“Ed has been a key member of George’s leadership team, so moving him into the role of CEO during this critical time of growth will help ensure our many strategic projects remain on schedule, and this organization continues its relentless focus on mission, stewardship and excellence," Adams said.
Banos will take the helm starting July 1 which coincides with Hernandez's last day.
Banos has more than 30 years of experience in administrative health care and has garnered an extensive resume including serving as the president and CEO of Duke Lifepoint Upper Peninsula Health System and the CEO of Superior Health Partners prior to joining University Health in 2015.
He earned his bachelor's degree in Health Records Administration from the University of Pittsburgh and received his master’s in Health Service Administration from Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Banos is a member of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and is eager to serve the San Antonio community.
“I am extremely grateful to the board of managers for their confidence in me, and for the opportunity to serve our patients and our community in this new role,” Banos said. “University Health is a special organization and it will be my great honor to lead this dedicated, compassionate and highly skilled team. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to be mentored by George over the past nine years, and deeply committed to the unique mission and deeply-rooted values of University Health.”
University Health also plans to open two large multi-specialty clinics by early 2026.
