Suspect shot by officers after chase in Alamo Heights identified

Police have identified a suspect who led them on a chase and who SAPD fired upon on Monday morning.

A suspect, now identified as 32-year-old John Carlos Alvear, is recovering from gunshot wounds after being shot by police officers following a chase on the city's northeast side.

The officer-involved shooting was reported Monday morning in a residential area located in the 200 block of Chevy Chase Drive.

The San Antonio Police Department said the chase started not far from there at a hotel in the 1100 block of Austin Highway.

Police say that the suspect has three active felony warrants. He's accused of evading arrest in December, aggravated assault, and family violence. He was sought by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force this morning.

SAPD confirmed the suspect was unarmed but said 'officers felt threatened' due to the suspect's alleged violent past.

After sustaining gunshot wounds the suspect was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center where he is in 'critical but stable' condition, according to SAPD.
