Woman bitten on leg after encounter with loose dogs on the northwest side, officials say

Animal Services contacted the owner of the dogs and they were issued criminal citations for failing to secure their pets.

SAN ANTONIO — A woman was bitten after encountering several dogs during a walk on the southwest side, police say.

Authorities say the 44-year-old woman was walking on West Southcross Boulevard at about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

When she got to the intersection at Priscilla Street, an unknown number of loose dogs came out of a nearby home's yard.

Officials say one of the dogs bit her on her right leg during the encounter.

Several authorities arrived at the scene later on, and the dogs attacked both an Animal Services vehicle and an SAPD patrol vehicle.

ACS interim director Mike Shannon says his team has identified the owner of the dogs.

“We have five of them that we’ve impounded," he said. "We have them here at our facility as part of our investigation.”

The dogs were described as lab-mixes.

"We have issued over 30 citations," Shannon said. "I believe 32 citations, for a variety of laws that were broken.”

Animal Services contacted the owner of the dogs and they were issued criminal citations for failing to secure their pets. Other violations include the bite itself along with no proof of rabies, vaccinations or microchips.

“This is an example of really irresponsible pet ownership where the owner is not doing right and creating an unsafe situation in their neighborhood which would result in this bite,” Shannon said.

Five out of the eight dogs have been taken to the animal shelter as officers determine which dog bit the woman.

This is an ongoing investigation.
