SAFD rescues woman from burning northeast-side house, authorities say

The woman was taken to a local hospital for injuries and for possible smoke inhalation.

SAN ANTONIO — An elderly woman was rescued from a burning house on the northeast side Thursday morning, authorities say.

At about 8 a.m., the San Antonio Fire Department was called to the 5100 block of Prince Valiant Drive in response to a structure fire.

While there, a woman was rescued from the burning structure by SAFD. The woman was then taken to a local hospital for injuries and smoke inhalation. Neighbors who’ve known her for years are grateful she’s alive.

Rick Parker has lived in the northeast side neighborhood for 33 years. The sound of fire engines and sirens alerted him that something was wrong.

“Happened to be on my morning walk this morning and saw a lot of smoke,” Parker said. "My wife told me that she said, when she talked to her before they took her to the hospital, that she just smelled the smoke and thought somebody was barbequing.”

Joe Arrington with SAFD says the cause of the fire is still under investigation. He believes the start of the fire was at the front door.

“Crews made an aggressive interior attack," Arrington said. "Kind of some cluttered conditions not a full-on hoarding situation, but cluttered condition inside.”

According to the elderly woman’s family members, they confirmed she lived in the house alone. The home is likely a total loss.

“This house next door, they had her on the ground, and I thank God that she got out,” Parker said.

KENS 5 spoke with the elderly woman's family members who said she is expected to be ok, but she is traumatized from the experience.
