'She was a hostage in her own home' | Woman stabbed to death by her ex-husband, police say

54-year-old Martin Garcia is accused of killing his ex-wife, 66-year-old Teresa Garcia on Dec. 5 off Channing Street.

SAN ANTONIO — The son of a woman stabbed to death in her home last week claims the murder was out of jealousy.

54-year-old Martin Garcia is accused of killing his ex-wife, 66-year-old Teresa Garcia on Dec. 5 off Channing Street.

Police said Martin called them that night and admitted he had killed her. They said he had attempted to kill himself.

Michael Garcia is Teresa’s son. He said Martin is not his biological father but has been in his life since he was 14.

He said he could never forgive him for what he did.

“She was a hostage in her own home,” Garcia said.

Michael said his mother always saw the best in people. Even after she and Martin separated in 2018, she allowed him to live with her.

“They’ve always been back and forth through the 30 something years but this was the time she was done,” Michael said.

He said Martin had been in several relationships since they split. But his mother had just recently moved on.

He said the day she was killed, he spoke to both of them and learned his mom was in the process of moving out.

“He told everyone who would listen to him, If I can’t have her, no one will,” Michael said.

San Antonio police said Teresa had been stabbed multiple times. They took Martin to the hospital but he was eventually booked in the Bexar County Jail and is facing a murder charge.

“He took advantage of her big heart and when he realized that was his last lifeline to any possibility to have a normal life, he decided to take hers,” Michael said.

Michael said his mom had called the police in the past to try and kick Martin out but said she was not educated on the steps she would have to take to properly evict him.

He added, she had never asked for help from family or friends.

“She didn’t know how to get rid of this guy without getting other people in trouble,” Michael said.

Michael said his mother’s funeral is this Friday where she will be buried next to his daughter who he lost to COVID two years ago. He said that is the last gift he can give her for Christmas.

Martin Garcia remains in the Bexar County Jail with a $200,000 bond.
