AUSTIN, Texas — Two emus were safely captured after they were found running around Zilker Park in Central Austin on Thursday evening.
According to the Austin Animal Center (AAC), there were multiple calls around 7 p.m. about two large birds roaming near the baseball fields at the park.
Animal Protection Officers Figueroa and Hickman arrived within 30 minutes and met Austin Police Department officers who had also responded, AAC said.
The officers worked together to corral the birds and capture them with a large net. The emus were then loaded onto the animal protection trucks and brought back to the shelter, where they were temporarily housed in outdoor dog kennels on the center’s truck port.
They were taken to the Austin Zoo on Friday afternoon.
Anyone who knows the owner of the birds is asked to email animal.reclaim@austintexas.gov.
