A $44M Florida lotto ticket has expired – what happens next with all that money?

The Florida Lottery says the winning ticket was bought on June 13 in Kissimmee.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Many people wish for the chance to win some big money by playing the lottery.

However, one Florida Lotto ticket reported to have won $44 million in prize money remains unclaimed.

But it gets worse.

The winning ticket was bought on June 14, and the Florida Lottery says whoever has that ticket can no longer claim it since all the winnings have expired.

What happens next to the $44 million that should've been granted to the winner? The Florida Lottery says it will be used for good reasons.

Out of all the money, 80% will go directly to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund, which supports programs within the Florida Department of Education. The remaining 20% will reportedly return to the pool prize which will then be awarded in future prizes or special prize promotions.

The Florida Lottery says the winning ticket was bought at a Sunoco Express located on North Orange Blossom Trail in Kissimmee. The winning numbers for the drawing on that day were 9, 13, 15, 46, 51 and 52.
