MADE IN SA: Fiesta medals made into statement pieces

Fiesta medals through the years

SAN ANTONIO-- It’s Fiesta medal season. But what do you do with them after fiesta is over?

One woman has created a way to keep your medals from gathering dust.

Fiesta is well known for its culture, food and, of course, the medals. The owner of Bella’s Bijoux and Beads is tasked with coming up with more creative and fashionable uses for the medals of years past.

“Because women can’t have enough glitz,” said Cathy Meyer, the owner of Bella’s Bijoux and Beads. “I had a client two years ago who had probably 300 fiesta medals and she wanted to do something with them and use them as gifts for Fiesta."

The medals she worked with were adorned with crystals, stones and ribbons.

Cathy has assembled 50 necklaces so far. Some of the medals she’s come across date back to the 90’s.

“It’s just kind of a remembrance,” Meyer said.

The statement pieces will surely turn heads at this year’s Fiesta.

“I think it’s just a neat idea to just display as many medals as you have,” Meyer said.

You can order a fiesta medal necklace at Homestead Handcrafts.

From now until June, Meyer will donate $10 to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for every necklace order.
