Consumers awaiting pre-orders of virtual reality devices Oculus Rift and HTC Vive might need to wait longer than expected.
Oculus cites an "unexpected component shortage" for delays in original shipping estimates on early orders of the VR headset, according to emails sent to consumers. It's not clear how long the delays would last for early orders.
Oculus started shipping units of its Rift headset at the end of March, ushering in a new wave of enthusiasm for the virtual reality space. Users can purchase a standalone Rift or a bundle pairing the headset with a compatible PC.
In a tweet posted Saturday, Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe acknowledged the delays, noting all pre-orders will earn free shipping.
Meanwhile, in a blog post published over the weekend, HTC says it had to reinstate some pre-orders for the Vive after they were automatically cancelled during processing.
"We want to assure our customers that we’ll work with them to process their payment so they can receive their Vive when they were expecting it," reads the statement from HTC.
