Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry underwent an MRI on Monday afternoon revealing a Grade 1 MCL sprain in his right knee, the team announced on Twitter.
A Grade 1 sprain is the least severe on a scale of three, but he will miss at least the next two weeks before being re-evaluated.
The injury that caused the sprain occurred late in the first half of Game 4 of the Warriors' first-round series with the Houston Rockets when Curry, who was making his return from a two-game absence after suffering an ankle injury in Game 1, slipped awkwardly on the floor while defending a Trevor Ariza jumpshot. He went down grabbing his right knee, and gingerly jogged back to the locker room.
He tested out the knee before the start of the second half, but went back to the locker room and was ruled out for the remainder of the game. The Warriors went on to win 121-94 and have a 3-1 series lead despite their MVP point guard having played just 39 total minutes through four games.
“He’s one of the biggest competitors I’ve ever been around,” Warriors do-it-all big man Draymond Green told USA TODAY Sports after Game 4. “That’s what flies so far under the radar for him. He’s so good, his shot is so great, his ballhandling is so great, the oopty-doo (style), and you forget to look at how competitive he is. He’s a (expletive) beast, and that’s what makes him who he is. …He wants to be out there. He wants to play.”
"I just feel so bad for him," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said after the game. "He's been healthy all year long and all the sudden the playoffs start and a couple fluke things."
The Warriors have a chance to end the series with Houston on Wednesday in Game 5.
