SAPD: Homeless woman gives birth to baby in wooded area near Salado Creek, leaves to smoke cigarette at bar

Police say the baby is OK, and both the mother and baby are at a local hospital.

SAN ANTONIO — A newborn baby was found in a wooded area near Salado Creek with their umbilical cord attached, according to police.

Around 3:40 p.m., police were called to the area of 1900 Austin Highway after say they found a man carrying a baby he found in a wooded area with its umbilical cord still attached.

According to their investigation, a woman experiencing homelessness gave birth to the baby in that area. Police say the woman then left the baby there, walked away and went up to a nearby bar area to "have a cigarette."

A man then walked up and found the baby, alerting nearby construction workers.

Police say the baby is OK, and both the mother and baby are at a local hospital. Police were waiting to speak to the people involved.

Information is limited at this time. The gender of the baby is unclear, as is whether the man or woman knew each other. It's also unclear whether the mother will face any charges over the incident.

This is a developing story. KENS 5 will update this article as we learn more.
