The honor flight took off from the San Antonio International Airport at 5:30 a.m.

SAN ANTONIO — An honor flight with 20 United States military veterans headed to the nation's capital for a well-deserved thank you Friday morning.

The honor flight took off from the San Antonio International Airport at 5:30 a.m.

The brave women and men are heading to Washington D.C. to visit national monuments dedicated to their service.

The plane was full of 12 Army veterans, five Air Force veterans, two Navy veterans and one Coast Guard veteran.

Three of the veterans served in three wars each and among the group are three female veterans and two are actually twin sisters.

"I'm so looking forward to seeing the monuments," Irene Battle, an Air Force veteran said.

The group will return on Sunday night to water cannon salute on the runway. They also will be recognized during a welcome home ceremony with their friends and family in attendance.

Honor Flight San Antonio has offered this all expense paid trip for veterans since 2014. The trip is offered twice a year and could not be possible without the help of volunteers and the generosity of multiple supporters.

After this trip Honor Flight will have taken over 400 veterans to the nation's capital.
