'This is our Super Bowl' | Bexar County Elections Dept. witnesses record-breaking first day of early voting

Early voting runs from Oct. 21 to Nov. 1 at dozens of polling sites throughout Bexar County.

SAN ANTONIO — The first day of early voting in Bexar County resulted in record-breaking turnout with just a couple weeks until the November 5 election.

By 1:45 p.m. Bexar County elections officials recorded more than 23,370 in-person early voters, surpassing 2018 numbers.

As of 6 p.m., the Bexar County Elections Department indicated there were 43,396 early voters.

“Am I sorry they have to stand in line? Yes. Am I excited that there’s great crowds out there. You better believe it," said Bexar County Elections Administrator Jacquelyn Callanen. "This is what we prepped for and I think someone used the term this is our Super Bowl."

Eligible voters are tasked with casting their ballots at dozens of polling sites throughout Bexar County, which is home to just over 1.2 million registered voters.

Callanen stressed the first two days of early voting tend to be among the busiest.

She said additional voting machines have been distributed and poll workers have been shuffled around to various polling sites.

Callanen is reminding registered voters to come prepared by bringing an official form of ID and bring a filled in sample ballot to expedite the time it takes to fill out their actual ballot.

Jo Lewis was among the dozens of voters at the Cody Library on the northwest side of San Antonio. She’s been anticipating the first day of early voting for a while.

“I am just a true patriot. I love our country,” Lewis said. “It’s like oh my gosh look at this line and I’m telling everybody how excited I am and I don’t know if anybody’s that excited because the line is so long.”
