CHICAGO — The Democratic National Convention is officially finished in Chicago, culminating with Vice President Kamala Harris accepting the party's nomination.
But for the second night in a row, South Texas was represented on stage, this time by a mother of a Robb Elementary shooting victim.
Kimberly Mata-Rubio joined several people on stage to share how gun violence has impacted her life. Mata-Rubio's daughter, Lexi, was one of the 21 shooting victims, killed two years ago at the Uvalde school.
She spoke about how the day began with Lexi being recognized at Robb for good grades and citizenship. They even took photos, which would be the last one she would ever take with her daughter.
"She wore a St. Mary's [University] sweatshirt and a smile that lights up the room," Mata-Rubio said while on stage. "Thirty minutes later, a gunman murdered her, 18 classmates, and two teachers. [...] Uvalde is national news. Parents everywhere reach for their children. I reach out for the daughter I will never hold again."
Also speaking during this time was U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath, a Georgia lawmaker whose son was shot and killed in 2012, as well as former Sandy Hook Elementary teacher Abby Clements.
San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Sheriff Javier Salazar both spoke at the convention, backing Vice President Harris' push for the White House.
