Nirenberg, Brockhouse square off in final debate

Less than three days before Election Day, the leading mayoral candidates made their last pitch at a debate hosted by KLRN and the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.

SAN ANTONIO — On Thursday night, with Election Day looming, the top two mayoral candidates faced off in a final debate.

The race between Mayor Ron Nirenberg and City Councilman Greg Brockhouse has been a heated one. They made their last pitch at the debate hosted by KLRN and the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.

"It takes considerate, thoughtful and deliberate leaders to make sure we move our city forward," Nirenberg said.

"We can't have another two years of incomplete," Brockhouse said.

Nirenberg and Brockhouse didn't hold back.

"I think the record is very clear on Councilman Brockhouse's indebtedness to the fire and police unions in this city," Nirenberg said.  Before he became councilman, they put $478,000 into his pocket so he can be in theirs."

"It is a long list of lies from Mayor Nirenberg in his attempt to hold on to his job," Brockhouse said. "At the end of the day, I was a business owner. The mayor doesn't understand that because he has never ran a business other than a gym out of his garage."

The 45-minute debate tackled several issues, including property taxes and the future of mass transit.

One issue that divides the two – the controversial vote to ban Chick-Fil-
A
from San Antonio International Airport plans – was also brought up.

"The record speaks for itself, Ron," Brockhouse said. "You cannot now all of a sudden grow a conscious on it because it is election time and you realize it is the topic of every poll site in our city."

"First, my faith can not be found on a fast-food menu period," Niernberg responded. "The councilman continues to put words in to other people's mouths. We have to make rational decisions in the city of San Antonio."
