Rep. Colin Allred welcomes endorsement by Bexar County sheriff in run for Senate

According to some recent polls, Allred is trailing incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz by a few points.

SAN ANTONIO — Colin Allred, the Democratic challenger vying to unseat Republican incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz in November, returned to San Antonio Friday where he picked up yet another endorsement.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar introduced Allred, reflecting on the winter freeze of 2021 that wiped out power for millions of Texans.

“We were working very hard to save lives and where was Ted Cruz, in Cancun sunning himself,” Salazar said.

Salazar wrapped up his remarks, making his support for Allred official.

“That’s why I’m whole heartedly endorsing my good friend Colin Allred for senator,” Salazar said.

The former NFL linebacker has his eyes set on addressing various issues, including efforts to increase public safety funding and pass laws that provide enhanced protection for law enforcement.

Allred’s stop in San Antonio comes less than 24 hours after the ambush killing of a Dallas police officer and injury of two other officers. The suspect was killed in a shootout.

“Just last night we got another reminder in Dallas of how dangerous and how critical the role of our law enforcement officers is,” Allred said. “I’ve supported efforts to make sure that our state and local law enforcement have body armor. I was also proud to work with Senator John Cornyn on the bipartisan Safer Communities Act. This legislation is already helping to save lives.”

On immigration policy, Allred noted Democrats and Republicans must come together, especially in light of the so-called bipartisan border bill that failed this year.

“We have to pass smart legislation like the bipartisan border deal that Senator Ted Cruz voted against,” Allred said. “To be very clear that would have helped us hire more border patrol agents, more immigration judges and have money for technology to help secure the border.”

Sen. Cruz has pushed for legislation that resumes building of the wall initiated by former President Donald Trump and reinstating of the Remain in Mexico policy.

According to some recent polls, Allred is trailing Cruz by just a few points in a tight race that will be determined by voters on Nov. 5.
