DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — A man suffered severe head injuries and died on the Fourth of July after lighting a firework and placing it on his head, according to South Carolina investigators.
Emergency crews responded to Cottonwood Drive in Summerville around 10:20 p.m. on Thursday.
According to the Dorchester County Coroner's Officer, the man lit a "large firework device" and put it on his head in the street. The firework then exploded, causing massive head injuries.
The coroner's office said the man, 41-year-old Allen Ray McGrew, was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m.
"The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and Dorchester County Coroner’s Office are investigating," the coroner's office said.
