Federal authorities have started the process to transfer 2,800 inmates out of a federal prison in South Texas.
Several hundred prisoners seized control of part of the prison in Raymondville. The inmates got out of their barracks and started fires inside three of the prison's housing units.
Officials now say the prison is no longer fit to live in due to the damage.
The riot erupted Friday when prisoners refused to eat breakfast or report to work to protest poor medical services. Three inmates and two corrections officers were injured.
The inmates are described as "low-level" offenders who are primarily immigrants in the U.S. illegally.
