SAN ANTONIO — The holiday shopping season is in full swing, and that means holiday music is now being played 24/7.
But that may not be a good thing for everybody. That leads us to tonight's VERIFY, submitted by KENS 5 viewer (and Christmas lover) Beth Robertson.
THE QUESTION
Is it true that Christmas music can be bad for your mental health?
THE SOURCES
- Loka Pandya, an expert on joy and Chief Joy Officer for Loka Enterprises LLC
- Clinical psychologist Linda Blair
THE ANSWER
WHAT WE FOUND
Pandya said for some, the music can bring them down.
"It can't be a blanket statement... but for a few people it could be (detrimental)," he said. "And the reason that is, is because many times Christmas music will actually kind of initiate stresses. People are overwhelmed with lots of things to do, lots of planning, lots of people. There going to be lots of emotions that they can be experiencing and they may be even overwhelmed by finances as well."
In a recent article on observer.com Blair agreed and "warns against jamming out to Christmas music too early in the holiday season, because it may prematurely trigger the stress of Christmas shopping, cooking, cleaning, and interacting with your weird in-laws."
So yes, it is true. For some, listening to Christmas music can be bad for your mental health.
Pandya also told us for most people holiday music is good for their mental health as it brings them back to their childhood, as well as thoughts of presents and being with friends and family.
