Verify: No, President Biden's Oval Office address wasn't pre-recorded

A fake image with the wrong time is floating around social media.

SAN ANTONIO — As the November election approaches, it is expected that social media will see an uptick of misinformation. In this Verify we find out picking the real from the fake is becoming increasingly difficult.

THE QUESTION

Was President Biden's address to the country on Wednesday night not live, but recorded?

THE SOURCES

  • Screen grabs from the President's Oval Office address.

THE ANSWER

This is false.

No, President Biden's Oval Office address was not pre-recorded.

WHAT WE FOUND

First we took a look at the original picture and focus on the watch. At the time of 8:10 p.m., the picture appears to show a watch with a time shortly after 6. Keep in mind the watch is upside down because of the way President Biden's arm is resting, and the angle of the photo. The watch band also appears to be dark gray or possibly a dull silver in color, with a black watch face.

When we look at a screen grab we took from last night's address, the watch band is clearly a shiny silver color. This second picture shows the face also has blue, which does not appear in the picture people are falling for on social media.

So no, it is false. President Biden's address was live as evidenced by the correct watch on his wrist.

As the November election draws closer, we'll be seeing plenty more fake images, so it's important to do your due diligence before spreading something around social media that turns out to be fake.
