When it comes to snuggling up on the couch near the Christmas tree, many may have a holiday film on TV.
"It is I would call an escape from the everyday things that are going on, having to cook the meal, having 15 people come over, having to make sure that everything tastes good," Childs said. "When I sit down and watch a holiday movie, I don't have to worry about all of that."
Fielding Graduate University states that the familiar and simple format, often predictable and not at all stressful, delivers comfort and improves our mood.
Christmas movies are also designed to activate nostalgia. They bring us back to the good old days with stories and music that stimulate our sentimental associations with the past. Childs says the magic of a holiday movie can boost the feel-good chemicals in our brain, like serotonin.
These movies are comforting because the characters are easy to connect with and we can always count on the fairytale ending that comes along with holiday specials. Researchers also say our brains find comfort in patterns, so we know there will be a kiss at the end and that boosts our mood.
So go ahead and put on that cheesy holiday flick!
