VERIFY | Can repeated use of a Stanley cup straw give you mouth wrinkles?

The hot and cold tumblers have been flying off the shelves.

SAN ANTONIO — Stanley cups are flying off the shelves these days. But, there are concerns on social media regarding the straw that comes with the cup.

No, it doesn't have to do with the environment, but your face. Straws have been around for a long time, but popularity of these cups have re-ignited a little debate. Time to put it to rest. Tonight's claim was sent in by Monica Nino.

THE QUESTION

Will repeated use of the straw in Stanley cups give you mouth wrinkles?

THE SOURCES

  • Dr. Carmen Castilla, a member of the American Academy of Dermatology
  • Dr. Justine Park with the Skin and Beauty Center

THE ANSWER

TRUE

WHAT WE FOUND

Dr. Castilla told us the straws can indeed cause wrinkles to develop around the mouth.

"Any repetitive muscle movement that causes the skin to wrinkle or crease as that muscle is moving can lead to wrinkle formation over time," said Castilla.

Park told us it isn't the fact the cup is a Stanley Cup, but that the straw, is a straw.

"If drinking out of a straw from a Stanley Cup causes wrinkles, then yes, drinking out of any straw would cause the same type of wrinkle to form," she said.

So yes, it is true. Repeated use of a Stanley cup straw, or any straw, could give you mouth wrinkles.

We reached out to Stanley 1913 about this Verify and to find out if claims of lead in the cup are true. We have yet to hear back.
