SAN ANTONIO — For most smokers quitting smoking is not an easy task. But one beverage you may be drinking, could be a helpful way to quit. The CDC says it takes the average smoker 8 to 11 attempts to quit smoking permanently. If you're one of them, you've probably looked online for quick quitting tips.
THE QUESTION
Does green tea help ease nicotine addiction?
THE SOURCES
- Kirk Evoy, a clinical pharmacist at University Health, and a clinical associate professor at UT Austin
- Dr. Arlene Reyes, a clinical assistant professor and family practice physician at UT Health San Antonio
THE ANSWER
FALSE
WHAT WE FOUND
"The theory behind green tea in part is due to potential cigarette substitutes. Something with a mild stimulus effect from the caffeine and, and there some other stimulants that are in green tea. So it may help with that stimulating effect that a person would typically get when they smoke a cigarette," Evoy said.
He also told us that green tea has amino acids, which could temporarily help reduce stress levels. Dr. Reyes also says the amino acids could help you relax, but there needs to be more research.
"Green tea has been studied for many of its potential health benefits. Chock full of antioxidants which we know can fight free radicals. But the evidence supporting green tea as a specific treatment for nicotine cravings is limited," said Dr. Reyes.
So no, it is false. Green tea does not help ease nicotine addiction.
