SAN ANTONIO — Trying to make an appointment with DPS online can be tough, and often you can't get one for months, or you end up going in and hoping there is a cancellation. So doing it all online just makes sense. But what if you need a new picture?
That brings us to tonight's claim sent in by KENS5 viewer Lisa from Helotes.
THE QUESTION
Do you need a new driver's license picture taken at DPS when you turn 30?
THE SOURCES
- Paul Esquivel, the Central Texas Regional Manager for the Department of Public Safety
- Texas Department of Public Safety website
THE ANSWER
FALSE
WHAT WE FOUND
Esquivel told us you don't need a new picture taken, unless your first license was issued when you were 16 or 17 years old.
"Even if you've got your license, when you're under under 18, you know your first renewal, you'll have to come in and get a picture. But once you renew it then, outside outside the 18, you're eligible to renew online," Esquivel said.
If you do decide you want a new picture on either your license or ID card the Texas Department of Public Safety website says:
"To get a new photo on your driver license/ID card, you must visit a driver license office and order a duplicate for $11."
So no, it is false. You do not need a new driver's license picture taken at DPS when you turn 30.
DPS has a link on their website to determine if you need to visit a driver license office or if you meet the requirements to conduct your transaction online.
