SAN ANTONIO — The first half of 2024 was a huge year in solar, with Texas reaping the benefits. But a claim that we look into says Texas may be taking a huge solar lead. We know we get a lot of sunshine in Texas, and many businesses and residents are taking advantage to lower their bills.
THE QUESTION
Is it true that Texas is going to surpass California when it comes to the amount of solar energy produced within the next few years?
THE SOURCES
- Abigail Ross Hopper, the President and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association
- The U.S. Energy Information Administration
THE ANSWER
TRUE
WHAT WE FOUND
Hopper says for just 2024, Texas has already taken over California in the number of installations. She told us, "California is still number one overall, but honestly, in the next year, two years, three years, Texas is going to be number one."
Data from the U.S. Energy Administration shows the massive growth in solar in Texas, between 2022 and 2023 with an increase of more than 61 percent in solar generation, compared to just 23.1 percent in California.
And you don't have to own a home to go solar.
"You buy a share of a solar farm, you get the bill savings on your electricity bill, but you don't have to commit to that upfront cost and that upfront commitment on your roof," Hopper said.
So yes, it is true. Texas is going to surpass California when it comes to the amount of solar energy produced within the next few years.
