Verify: Yes, you need to obey school zones, even if the school is no longer open

That also includes holidays. You should always assume the lights are on for a reason

SAN ANTONIO — 15 SAISD campuses that closed this summer as part of a "rightsizing plan" to combat declining enrollment, are still owned by the district. As KENS5's Jeremy Baker reports in tonight's Verify, there seems to be a little confusion when it comes to the school zones surrounding each school.

If you've driven by any one of the shuttered schools you'll see that the school zones continue to flash during the normal hours in the morning and at night

THE QUESTION

Is it true that you need to obey school zones, even if the school is no longer open?

THE SOURCES

  • Hugo Cardona, a Sargeant with the SAISD campus patrol.

THE ANSWER

TRUE

WHAT WE FOUND

BSgt. Cardona says yes, you must obey the school zones around closed schools because the district is still using them for drop off in the morning, and pick up in the afternoon.

"Our students are being transferred to the other schools, to the new schools. So there in those hours, we still want the public to slow down during those, times to for the safety of the students," Sgt Cardona said.

He says even on holidays when school is not in session, the law says you must obey laws regarding school zones.

"Whenever the flashing lights are on, they have to assume, there's something's going on nearby and we need them to slow down," he told us.

So yes, it is true. You need to obey school zones, even if the school is no longer open.

Sgt. Cardona also told us to pay attention to the stop arm of the busses, especially if they are in an area without flashing school zone signs. And that the district will keep the pick up and drop off locations as they are for now, until they re-evaluate.
