TxDOT to not have any temporary construction lane closures during the eclipse

Here's what TxDOT is doing to help keep traffic moving during the total solar eclipse on April 8.

WACO, Texas — Agencies at the local, state and federal levels are putting the final touches on their plans for the total solar eclipse on April 8. TxDOT is one of the departments that's buckling down in preparation for the hundreds of thousands anticipated to be traveling along the Interstate 35 corridor.

Jake Smith, the spokesperson for TxDOT-Waco District, said the Waco district is in a unique position when it comes to the eclipse, as all eight counties that it serves will be in the path of totality. With that in mind, they're planning on having a presence around the area to help keep traffic flowing.

"We will have crews patrolling around our roadways, but it is more to assist with traffic control, roadway obstructions and keeping traffic moving," Smith said.  "We do want to get the message out there to motorists to not stop on the roadway. Do not park on the shoulder to view this eclipse. If you are driving, keep your eyes on the road and not in the sky and take those glasses off while you're driving. Do not wear them while you're driving and let's all be safe out there."

Smith told 6 News that TxDOT has decided to not allow any temporary construction-related lane closures on the day of the eclipse to help keep traffic flowing.

Smith said they are anticipating more traffic, or at least more vehicles on the roadways, during the eclipse and immediately following it. He advises locals and tourists to be calm and courteous during the event.

"We do anticipate major traffic impacts to the major corridors for us," Smith explained. "That's I-35 and I-14 and even outlying roads, rural areas, roadways that typically see little traffic. Drivers out there, residents out there should prepare for an increase in traffic and number of vehicles."

Smith also wanted to remind locals and tourists to dispose of their trash in the appropriate bins.

"We want to keep our state beautiful and we're going to have a lot of people, so please throw away your trash, recycle, don't litter and let's keep Texas beautiful," Smith said.
