Texas A&M moves into AP Top 10, while Texas drops despite winning

The Aggies stormed back against LSU in the second half to down the Tigers 38-23. Meanwhile, Texas edged Vanderbilt, 27-24.

Texas A&M's win over LSU should shake up the Top 25 when the new rankings come out Sunday.

HOUSTON — Texas A&M jumped up four spots to No. 10 in the new AP Top 25, which was released on Sunday. Meanwhile, Texas dropped a spot to No. 6 despite winning against Vanderbilt on Saturday.  The team Texas A&M beat -- LSU -- dropped eight spots to No. 16.

 Below is the new AP Top 25.

  • No. 1 Oregon beat No. Illinois 38-9 
  • No. 2 Georgia was idle
  • No. 3 Penn State beat Wisconsin, 28-13
  • No. 4 Ohio State beat Nebraska, 21-17
  • No. 5 Miami (Fla.) beat Florida State, 36-14
  • No. 6 Texas beat Vanderbilt, 27-24
  • No. 7 Tennessee was idle
  • No. 8 Notre Dame beat Navy 51-14
  • No. 9 BYU beat UCF, 37-24
  • No. 10 Texas A&M beat LSU, 38-23
  • No. 11 Clemson was idle (tied)
  • No. 11 Iowa State was idle (tied)
  • No. 13 Indiana beat Washington 31-17
  • No. 14 Alabama beat No. 21 Missouri, 34-0
  • No. 15 Boise State beat UNLV 29-24
  • No. 16 LSU lost to Texas A&M 38-23
  • No. 17 Kansas State beat Kansas, 29-27
  • No. 18 Pitt beat Syracuse, 41-13
  • No. 19 Ole Miss beat Oklahoma 26-14
  • No. 20 SMU beat Duke 28-27 (OT) 
  • No. 21 Army was idle
  • No. 22 Washington State
  • No. 23 Colorado beat Cincinnati, 34-23

However the AP rankings shake out, it's the College Football Playoff rankings that will determine the 12 teams that will compete for a national championship. The first rankings for the CFP come out next month.

When do the College Football Playoff rankings come out?

While the AP poll is the rankings during much of the season, it’s the CFP rankings will determine which teams play for a national championship this season. The first ranking of the CFP comes out on Nov. 5.  The College Football Playoff came into existence in 2014, but until this season, had only included the top four teams. This year, the CFP will expand to 12 teams.  Here’s how it will work.
