Longhorns, Aggies reignited rivalry has big implications...A spot in SEC Championship

Texas and Texas A&M set to renew rivalry with SEC Championship dreams on the line

TYLER, Texas — In their first year in the Southeastern Conference, the Texas Longhorns regular season finale has big implications.

The first Texas-Texas A&M football matchup in 13 years will be the biggest game of the weekend, with SEC Championship hopes on the line for both teams. No. 3 Texas secured a comfortable 31-17 win over Kentucky on Saturday afternoon. While soaking up the emotions of their final game at Darrell K. Royal Stadium for the 2024 season, the complex SEC tiebreaker process that would determine the two teams to face off in the SEC Championship was beginning to take shape.

Alabama suffered a shocking 24-3 loss to Oklahoma, while Ole Miss fell to Florida 24-17. As a result, No. 10 Georgia clinched a spot in the SEC Championship and is now waiting to learn who their opponent will be.

Meanwhile, the Texas A&M Aggies, despite a heartbreaking 43-41 loss to Auburn in four overtimes, still have a chance to make it to the conference championship — if they can secure a win over Texas.

If the Longhorns defeat the Aggies, they’ll claim the top seed and set up a rematch with Georgia. The Bulldogs dominated Texas 30-15 last month in Austin.
