KENS 5 Top 5: Steele, Reagan lock down top spots after opening games of the high school football season

Vinnie Vinzetta shares his top-five power rankings for football teams in the San Antonio area after an action-packed opening week.

SAN ANTONIO — Week 1 of Texas high school football is in the books, providing early hints at the San Antonio-teams that could be juggernauts this season ahead of potential playoff runs.

With the opening slate behind us, let's take a look at my KENS 5 Top 5 power rankings for local programs.

No. 5: Alamo Heights Mules (1-0)

The Mules went up the highway to Seguin and came back with a 47-19 win in tow! That's an impressive victory to get the season started on the road. Junior Quarterback Corey Dailey led a balanced offensive attack, tossing scores to Ayden Avila, Nik Henry and Lane Seidenberg, according to statistics provided by MaxPreps.

Dailey also rushed for 69 yards himself to bolster a 188-yard passing performance.

No. 4: Smithson Valley Rangers (1-0)

The Rangers machine came down from the Hill Country and handled Roosevelt in shutout fashion. The final from Comalander Stadium: 45-zip.

No. 3: New Braunfels Unicorns (1-0)

The Unicorns, too, came to the city. They too left winners via the shutout, a dominant 48-0 win over Madison.

No. 2: Reagan Rattlers (1-0)

Raegan's highly anticipated Week 1 matchup against the Brennan Bears was all for the green. 31-9 was the Saturday night final for the Rattlers' season-opening matchup.

No. 1: Steele Knights (1-0)

And the top spot in Week 1 goes to the Steele Knights! They handled Liberty Hill, 49-26. And this just in: Wide Receiver Jalen Cooper is a star. He hauled in three touchdown receptions from Quarterback Chad Warner, and averaged just under 15 yards per catch, according to MaxPreps.

Honorable mentions

We've got two this week! Wimberley shut out Canyon Lake 46-0. And the SotoCats also put on a show! Sotomayor starts 1-0 with their 33-10 win over the Clark Cougars.

Those are my top five! What are yours? Let us know on this story or at @VVinzetta on X.
