HOUSTON — Robert Reid, who played 13 years in the NBA, including his first 10 years with the Houston Rockets, died Monday at his home at the age of 68, KHOU 11 sports reporter Matt Musil confirmed.
According to Sports Illustrated, Reid was the 40th pick of the NBA drafts in 1977. He was selected by the Rockets and helped the team get to their first two NBA Finals appearances in 1980-81 and 1985-86.
"'Bobby Joe' was one of the most popular players to ever wear a Rockets uniform," KHOU 11's Matt Musil said. "We had so many great times together. Away from the Rockets, he was always a big supporter of my charitable causes."
Rockets owner Tillman Fertitta said he had known Reid for more than 40 years and his presence always brought joy to any room he was in.
"I will never forget watching the Rockets teams he was a part of in the 80s compete in the Finals and the love he had for the game," Fertitta said. "Robert's absence will be deeply felt, and he will be fondly remembered."
Reid played college ball in Texas for St. Mary's University in San Antonio.
He leaves behind a wife, Diana, and four children, Robert Jr., Keva, Crystal and Jana.
