KENS 5 Top 5: Brennan Bears knock Steele Knights off the top spot

Check out Vinnie Vinzetta's picks for the best San Antonio-area programs after four weeks.

SAN ANTONIO — Week 4 of South Texas high school football is in the books!

Read on for Vinnie's picks of the top five San Antonio-area programs one month into the season, including a shakeup in the No. 1 spot.

No. 5: Southwest Dragons (4-0)

Ranked fifth last week.

The Dragons are still undefeated and still winning big after shutting out Laredo Martin, 45-0, to get to 4-0. The offense is firing on all cylinders, but so is senior linebacker Tristin Quintanilla, who has 47 total tackles this season. They’re on the bye this week.

No. 4: Steele Knights (3-1)

Ranked first last week.

The 3-1 Knights fall from the top spot after losing at home to football powerhouse Austin Westlake, 41-16. They hadn't surrendered that many points since losing 51-48 at the hands of Judson in September 2019.

The Knights play rival Clemens this week.

No. 3: Alamo Heights Mules  (4-0)

Ranked third last week.

At 4-0, the Mules remain sitting pretty at No. 3 this week! They beat another 6-A opponent in Clemens, 38-19, to knock the Buffaloes to 1-3. The Mules look to remain perfect when they plan 2-2 Boerne this week.

No. 2: Pieper Warriors (4-0)

Ranked second last week.

It’s the 4-0 Pieper Warriors, close to the top after a 35-21 victory over Wagner. They've scored at least 35 points in every game this season, propelled by quarterback Cayden Keeth and wide receiver Isaiah Champagne as they continue to make noise in their senior years.

And what a showdown on the way, with Pieper taking on 3-1 Smithson Valley on Friday night.

No. 1: Brennan Bears (3-1)

Ranked fourth last week.

And the top spot goes to the 3-1 Brennan Bears, who lost their season opener but have recovered in dominating fashion, winning each of their last three games by an average margin of 28.7 points. That includes knocking off a very good Harlan team last week, 51-14. The Bears have been the 6-A San Antonio machine since Week 2 of the season.

Honorable mentions

Other still undefeated teams after four weeks include John Jay, Somerset, Randolph, Holy Cross, Crystal City and Poth.
