ARLINGTON, Texas — DeSoto has never lost in a state championship game – a streak the school continued on Saturday.
In the third championship appearance in school history, the Eagles took home the hardware yet again, this time by beating the Summer Creek Bulldogs in the 6A Division II title game, 74-14, setting a new record in 6A State Championship history.
With the win, DeSoto has won back-to-back championships after having beaten Austin Vandegrift, 42-17, last season.
Saturday's win marked the second state title win for head coach Claude Mathis, who came to DeSoto in 2008 and helped build the program into a statewide powerhouse -- but never won the big one -- before he left the team after its 2014 season to join Chad Morris’ staff at SMU.
DeSoto won its first title in 2016 with a 38-29 win over Cibolo Steele during Mathis' absence.
Mathis then returned to DeSoto in 2019, and finally got his first state title last season.
Now, he has another title added to the mantle.
With the win, DeSoto finished its season undefeated (15-0) -- and it did so in dominant fashion. The Eagles' averaged a margin of victory of just under 33 points per game heading into Saturday's game.
