KENS 5 Top 5: The best SA football teams ahead of the regular season finale

Here are Vinnie's picks for the best squads looking to make noise in the playoffs.

SAN ANTONIO — Ten weeks of Texas high school football are in the books, which means there's just one more slate of games left until the playoffs begin and teams start hunting a UIL championship.

Ahead of the final week, here are Vinnie Vinzetta's top picks for the best teams in the San Antonio area.

No. 5: Southwest Dragons (9-0)

Ranked fifth last week.

They did it: Southwest are district champions after toppling John Jay, 37-18, in the KENS 5 Game of the Week last Friday. The Dragons close out their season Thursday at Laredo Cigarroa.

No. 4: Steele Knights (8-1)

Ranked fourth last week.

The Knights have fourth place locked down for another week after winning the district championship. The combined score of their last two games: 125-0.

The Steele Knights dominated the Judson Rockets, 56-3, on Friday night, October 11, 2024, at D.W. Rutledge Stadium.

No. 3: Alamo Heights Mules (10-0)

Ranked third last week.

Ten straight weeks, 10 straight wins for the Mules. And a district championship to boot! They get this week off to prepare for playoff action in two weeks. Junior running back DK Garza has powered the team with his 17 touchdowns, per MaxPreps stats.

No. 2: Pieper Warriors (9-0)

Ranked second last week.

At No. 2 is Pieper, which secured their own district title in Week 10. Sensing the theme, here? The Warriors improved to 9-0 and wrap their campaign Thursday at Boerne Champion, with a shot at an undefeated regular season two years after they went 2-8.

No. 1: Brennan Bears (8-1)

Ranked first last week.

Brennan has dominated all season, and they dominated Taft, 69-0, last weekend. In fact, they've won their last three games by a combined score of 193-7; a three-game hot streak that's seen the Bears offense firing on all cylinders. Senior running back Malik White was a force to be reckoned with against Taft, rushing 15 times for 138 yards and four scores.

They close their regular season looking searching for a ninth straight win Friday against the Warren Warriors.
