Smithson Valley to battle for school's first-ever title against football juggernaut Aledo

The Rangers are seeking their first state title in four tries, but have a mammoth of an opponent waiting at AT&T Stadium.

SAN ANTONIO — One year removed from a heartbreaking loss to College Station in the state quarterfinals, Larry Hill's Smithson Valley Rangers (14-1) will play for a championship after winning their 14th straight game—a 49-21 beatdown of Brownsville Veterans Memorial.

The win sets up a date with reigning champion Aledo (15-0) at AT&T Stadium on Friday. They'll battle for bragging rights in District 5A-1, as well as their first championship after making it to the title game in 2001, 2002 and 2004.

Led by WR Freddie DuBose, a UT commit, the Rangers have dominated this season. Ever since losing a 17-16 thriller to Reagan to start the year, Smithson Valley has defeated its opponents by an average of 30 points, including getting revenge on College Station during its current playoff run.

Smithson Valley has a tough final task ahead: Aledo is an 11-time state champion, and hasn't been letting opponents off easy as it searches for its 12th. The Bearcats, whose scorching offense is anchored by TCU commit Hauss Hejny under center, have won their last five games over playoff opponents by an average of 26.6 points.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday.
