KENS 5 Top 5: Steele Knights retain dominance for third week in a row

Check out Vinnie Vinzetta's picks for the best San Antonio-area programs after three weeks.

SAN ANTONIO — Week 3 of South Texas high school football is in the books!

Read on for Vinnie's picks of the top five San Antonio-area programs nearly a month into the season.

No. 5. Southwest Dragons (3-0)

Ranked fifth last week.

They’ve improved to a sterling 3-0, and the offense is firing on all cylinders, having scored 30-plus points in all three wins. Quarterback AJ Franco and wide receiver Aazeryuan Voss have been a dream team in their senior seasons; the duo has connected for four touchdowns, according to data compiled by MaxPreps.

No. 4: Brennan Bears (2-1)

Not ranked last week.

The Bears appear to have figured it out after their season-opening loss against the Reagan Rattlers, following it up with wins at Smithson Valley two weeks ago and last Friday night's 38-0 shutout victory over Sotomayor.

No. 3: Alamo Heights Mules (3-0)

Ranked fifth last week.

The Mules went on the road to Canyon and posted 55 points on a Cougars team that hadn't given up that many since October 2021. Alamo Heights is undefeated and takes another 6-A plunge this week, hosting the 1-2 Clemens Buffaloes.

No. 2: Pieper Warriors (3-0)

Ranked second last week.

Week 3 brought another impressive outing for the Pieper Warriors, who downed previously undefeated Davenport on Friday night, 42-7. The Warriors have scored 118 points through their first three games, anchored by a monster start by quarterback Cayden Keeth (12 total touchdowns, 352 all-purpose yards per game, 74% passing completion percentage), per MaxPreps data.

The Pieper Warriors squeaked by the Boerne Greyhounds, 38-36, in a season-opening non-district game at Pieper High School on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024.

No. 1: Steele Knights

Ranked first last week.

But once again, the top spot belongs to the Steele Knights, who have yet to relinquish it this season.

The Knights have flashed some amazing offenses in their short program history, but this years it's something special. After dropping 62 points on Reagan last week, Steele has 170 points through three games this season, a far cry from the 119 points they tallied through the first three games of their past two campaigns. Can anything stop Steele?

Honorable mentions

And there are other undefeated (3-0) teams to make note of: Boerne Champion, John Jay, Southwest Legacy, Hondo, Somerset and the Poth Pirate are all perfect to start the season.
