SAN ANTONIO — The University Interscholastic League (UIL) released its biennial realignment plan Thursday morning, letting schools across Texas know who their district opponents will be for the next two years.
High school football coaches quickly worked to build out their new schedules with non-district opponents.
In the San Antonio area, many schools knew whether they would be moving up or down in classification, while many others received news of their realignment into a new district within their existing class level.
Below is a rundown of the major changes across the major UIL classes of high school sports in the San Antonio area.
New Braunfels Canyon squeaks by New Braunfels in Friday night thriller
CLASS 6A
New Braunfels and John Jay are moving from 6A down to Class 5A-I. Moving up from 5A-I to 6A are Canyon and Medina Valley.
John Jay's departure makes room for Marshall to move back into the same district with most other Northside ISD schools, still leaving Brandeis and Clark aligned with schools from North East ISD.
The northeast-side district containing Steele, Judson, Clemens, East Central and San Marcos now is adding Canyon, a Comal ISD school, and Buda Johnson.
District numbering also changed in this cycle. Schools from San Antonio's northeast side, previously known as District 27, are now District 29. The mostly North East ISD group was District 28, but now they're District 27. And the group of Northside ISD schools, previously known as District 29, are now District 28.
This all matters because of how these schools will face off in the early rounds of the football playoffs. District 29 lines up with Districts 30, 31 and 32, mostly from the Rio Grande Valley, whereas Districts 27 and 28 line up with Districts 25 and 26 from the Austin area.

CLASS 5A-I
District 13, previously known as District 12, is losing Canyon (moving up to 6A) and Buda Hays (staying in 5A-I but realigning with Austin schools.) The district is adding Pieper (moving up from Class 5A-II) and New Braunfels (sliding down from 6A.)
Meanwhile, District 14, previously called District 13, is losing Medina Valley, which is moving up to 6A, and gaining John Jay, which is dropping from 6A.
CLASS 5A-II
District 12, previously known as District 14, is going from 10 schools to just seven. The remaining schools are all from San Antonio ISD: Brackenridge, Burbank, Edison, Highlands, Sam Houston, Jefferson and Lanier.
The other three schools are moving to a newly formed District 13. Alamo Heights, Harlandale and McCollum are joined by Boerne (moving up from Class 4A-I), Kerrville Tivy, SA Veterans Memorial and Victoria West.
Davenport dominates the fourth round playoff matchup against Calhoun, 55-20.
CLASS 4A-I
Area schools are consolidating in the realignment as schools from Districts 13 and 14 are joining into a new District 14. The group includes current District 14 holdovers Fredericksburg, Kennedy, Somerset and Uvalde, plus District 13 transplants Canyon Lake and Davenport and current District 15 school Pleasanton.
CLASS 4A-II
Moving down from Class 4A-I to Class 4A-II is Memorial, which now joins District 14 with Bandera, Carrizo Springs, Devine and Pearsall.
