Boerne girl qualifies for U.S. Olympic Trials after placing second at Nike Outdoor Nationals

EUGENE, Ore. — A Boerne girl finished second in the girls mile at the Nike Outdoor Nationals held in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday.

Elizabeth Leachman, a student at Samuel V. Champion High School, ran the mile in 4:44.06, which is a personal best for the full mile. 

With that time, Leachman qualified for the 2024 U.S Olympic Track and Field Trials in the Womens 5,000 meters.

Leachman is the first Boerne Independent School District student in history to qualify for the U.S Olympic trials. 

Another San Antonio-area runner, Sophia Bendet of Celerity Performance of Texas, finished fifth overall in the girls 800-meter championship race, with a time of 2:7.57 seconds on Friday.

Leachman will compete again in the Olympic trials being held June 21-30 in Eugene, Oregon for a chance to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France taking place August 1-11.
