SAN ANTONIO — The season opener is the last day of August. It’s first year FBS Kennesaw State. They’ve been good their first nine years, but not great the last two. UTSA starts (1-0).
Then suddenly it’s week two in San Marcos against Texas State. No trap game with Texas the following week. This is the game! So have the ‘A’ game ready before going to Austin the following week.
And about that. The Roadrunners punched right with 'em for two thirds of the game last year at DKR, and Texas is at Michigan the week before. Psych advantage Roadrunners? The talent favors UT, but who knows.
Week four the Roadrunners are back inside the Dome with Houston Christian in town. The Huskies have played 110 games and won just 26 of those. The Roadrunners win so say the numbers.
Week five UTSA hits the road at East Carolina. The Pirates are steady, but not off the charts, but then again, nothing comes easy on the road.
Week six it's the second of back to back conference road games. This time at Rice. The Owls have shown signs of being better. Their home atmosphere is not great, but still not gonna be easy for the Birds.
Week seven FAU comes calling to San Antonio. Former Longhorns head coach Tom Herman now leads the Owls. I've no idea what that really means other than Florida Atlantic is on the rise, but hopefully not risen enough just yet.
Week eight UTSA goes to Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane expectations are low, so don’t stumble in T-town.
Week nine is big! The American conference favorites are in San Antonio in the Memphis Tigers. They are the unanimous pick to win the league. The Roadrunners can certainly shake that up!
Week ten UTSA welcomes North Texas in the second of three straight conference home games. I'd expect the Mean Green to be improved under second year HC Eric Morris, the former head coach at Incarnate Word.
Week eleven the Temple Owls fly to town. They’re picked last in the American. That’s all you need to know. Hopefully.
And the regular season finale has the Runners on the road at Army. It's never ever easy at Westpoint, and especially at the end of November. Lots could be on the line, and that’s what makes it great!
UTSA is one of the trendy picks to the College Football Playoff this season. If the schedule stars align that just might be more possible than any of us realize! #BirdsUp
