Missions to change name to 'Flying Chanclas' for part of upcoming season

Starting on Cinco de Mayo, the Missions will be calling themselves the "Flying Chanclas" for nine games this upcoming season.

The San Antonio Missions announced on Tuesday that they’ll be changing their name to the “Flying Chanclas” for a nine-game stretch during the upcoming season.

The club says that the move was inspired by San Antonio’s Hispanic community and the move is part of Minor League Baseball’s “Copa de la Diverion.”

“The club honors the matriarch of the Latino family, the Abuelita, and her symbol of strength, discipline and love with its on-field persona for this special series of events,” the Missions said in a press release. “The chancla has long been symbolic of the Abuelita as she maintains the structure and order of la familia.”

The team is planning to start the promotion on Saturday, May 5, Cinco de Mayo 2018.
