ARLINGTON, Texas — There was a scary moment during Monday night's game between the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles.
During the third inning of the game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Rangers outfielder Josh Smith was at bat when he was hit in the face by a pitch from Orioles' Danny Coulombe.
A slow-motion replay of the hit during the television broadcast showed how bad the impact was on Smith's jaw.
The 25-year-old was able to walk off the field before he left the game for treatment.
The Rangers said on Monday night that Smith was taken to a hospital for scans and evaluation of his face and jaw.
On Tuesday, Smith told reporters at the Rangers clubhouse, "I feel pretty good actually. I slept good... It's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Really no pain or anything like that."
Smith said he had cleared concussion protocol, though he anticipated he would continue to be monitored to make sure there are no issues. He said he also would probably see a dentist, though he didn't lose any teeth.
Manager Bruce Bochy said there were no immediate plans for Smith to go on in the injured list.
Texas acquired Smith in the Joey Gallo trade with the New York Yankees in 2021. Smith made his major league debut with the Rangers in May 2022.
