SAN ANTONIO — On Tuesday night, we saw something that could only happen with the National Basketball Association season suspended: Patty Mills dunked all over Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Antetokounmpo, the NBA's reigning MVP, went viral a few nights ago, struggling to pluck his way through Deep Purple's classic 'Smoke on the Water'. There's no shame in that, it's one of the first things anyone who has picked up a guitar in the last half-century starts with.
As the Adventure Time quote goes, "Sucking at sumthin' is the first step towards being sorta good at sumethin'.” Giannis is probably the most skilled seven-footer we've ever seen, but like many NBA players who are now self-quarantining, he's picking up a new skill.
On Tuesday night, Patty Mills put the reigning MVP to shame - and even tagged him on Twitter. Mills, who has obviously been shredding for a bit longer, dropped a silky-smooth cover of Jack Johnson's hit 'Banana Pancakes'.
If any member of the Spurs was going to be "that guy" who showed up to the function with a guitar and a bandana and got everyone swooning by whisper singing some Jason Mraz-type music, it would be Patty. He might be one of the only people in the world who could legitimately pull that off.
He didn't sing, but the hook of the song resonates on a dreary night in San Antonio as the world practices social distancing. "Can't you see that it's just raining? Ain't no need to go outside."
After the dust settled, Antetokounmpo had the best possible reaction to getting dunked on: he gave the man who bested him the props he deserved.
