Chris Paul says Victor Wembanyama has no ceiling on his potential; Markkanen reportedly prefers to stay in Utah

Paul has high praise for his newest teammate.

SAN ANTONIO — The newest member of the San Antonio Spurs had much to say about his teammate, Victor Wembanyama.

Chris Paul was a guest on "The Herd'' and was asked about Wemby's highest level he can reach in the NBA.

In a nutshell, Paul believes Wemby has no ceiling for the heights he can reach.

"I don't think he has one," Paul said. "He's one of those guys that after the game this past year we talked about how weird it was to guard and shoot over him."

Indeed, Wemby is one-of-one.

And with Paul teaming up with him, Wembanyama will have a chance to play with a Hall of Fame point guard who'll help him develop and get him in the right spots to dominate games next season.

The 2023-24 Rookie of the Year Award winner led all rookies in points (21.4), rebounds (10.6), and blocks (3.6) per game. He also ranked fourth in assists (3.9) and second in steals (1.2) per game. He is the second rookie to lead all NBA players in blocks per game in a season.

And that is just scratching the surface of what the Spurs center did last season.

What is scary for the rest of the league is that even he admits he can get better on the court.

"I am young, getting better every day, and I think we could say that for every month, to the next one. The good thing is my margin of progression, I don’t even know how big it is," he said last season. “I can get so much better, and this is what I am trying to do every game, every week and every month.”

The Spurs have been reportedly in the mix to trade for Jazz big man Lauri Markkanen, but there is a chance he may not come to San Antonio anytime soon.

According to a report via The Athletic, Markkanen may want to remain in Utah

"Lauri has really taken to Utah. His family has taken to Utah," The Athletics reports. "Obviously the Jazz can trade him between now and August 6, and Lauri knows that, but Lauri has forged a really close relationship to Will Hardy. And Will has really found a way to unlock his career."

Utah has reportedly wanted a significant return from the Warriors, which might indicate just how steep a price it'll take for Utah to trade him.

The open question is just how much are the Spurs willing to give up for the All-Star?
