SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs selected guard Stephon Castle at No. 4 in the 2024 NBA Draft, and the fanbase generally approved the pick.
However, the night turned ugly on social media once it was announced the team traded Rob Dillingham after selecting him at No. 8.
During the draft, the Spurs completed a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves, acquiring the right to swap first-round picks with Minnesota in the 2030 NBA Draft and Minnesota’s 2031 first-round pick in exchange for the draft rights to Dillingham.
This was when it got ugly, and most Spurs fans erupted in anger.
Many fans believed the team had gotten itself a scoring guard it could use immediately and help push the rebuild forward faster.
In addition, fans scoffed at Minnesota's picks as pointless and too far off in the future.
Here's a sample of how Spurs fans reacted to trading Dillingham, and it was not pretty:
To be fair, some fans applauded the move.
After the first round, team General Manager Brian Wright spoke about acquiring more draft assets.
"Because typically, it's a pretty good strategy. So we'll try to continue to make sound decisions with whatever we do," he said. "We want to continue to improve the team. We know that we've got a great runway here. We got some great young talent and we look to build around them in the right way."
