SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs are rebuilding, but a former Spurs player believes it will take a short time before the franchise returns to being a contender.
Ex-Spur Danny Green was a guest on San Antonio Sports Star's "The Blitz" and was asked his thoughts on the current rebuild, which begins with Victor Wembanyama.
"I think it is going to go fairly quickly because you got a star people want to play with," he said. "You can get free agents to come there now. You got guys that maybe want to be traded there because of a guy like Wemby."
Green stated that the Spurs have a good foundation with Wemby, Devin Vassell, and Keldon Johnson.
However, Green believes Wemby's star power is the key to pushing the Spurs out of the rebuild.
"With Wemby there, you got a draw. Somebody that can bring in other people to play there."
Green also opined that he sees a quick two-year rebuild, considering the landscape of the NBA.
"I think in two years, they'll be a lot better than they were this past year," he said. "I don't think it will take long."
For years, San Antonio is primed to be a significant player in free agency and the NBA Draft.
With Wembayama in uniform, the Spurs sit on a mountain of draft picks (first and second), have plenty of financial cap space, and players that, if needed, can be traded to help form a dominant team.
The goal is for the team to be an NBA superpower, as Spurs' Peter J. Holt said.
"When we look at the whole picture, we know we are on the right track. We'll find the balance between development and results. We don't want a roller coaster between victories and defeats. We want to build a superpower, ultra-competitive that lasts for a long time," Holt said.
Green believes the Spurs can reach the NBA top again, especially with coach Gregg Popovich and Buford still with the organization searching for high-character players.
"I don't think it will be too tough for RC and Pop to find guys in the right places to come in and not have an ego," he said.
However, the rebuild continues, and the next step is the upcoming NBA Draft. San Antonio holds two first-round picks (Nos. 4 and 8) and two second-round picks.
The team has options to make something happen to accelerate the rebuild, but whether they will is an open question.
