Lakers player says Victor Wembanyama should've won all NBA awards; Spurs nominee coach wins 2024 National Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Community Coach of the Year

"Being named the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Community Coach of the Year is an amazing honor," Coach Nesha said.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama is already an NBA star, but according to Lakers' D'Angelo Russell, he should have won all NBA Awards last season.

"He should have been Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player, Most Improved, All-NBA, MVP. For real," Russell said via the Tidal League.

Wemby was outstanding in his rookie season, but to sweep all NBA awards is a bit too much to say.

However, he did take away his fair share of awards. He was the unanimous 2024 Rookie of the Year, named to the All-Rookie First Team, runner-up to the Defensive Player of the Year Award, and named to the All-NBA Defensive First Team.

In addition, he took home three NBA Rookie of the Month Awards and set numerous league records.

For his sophomore season, oddsmakers predict he may win the 2024-25 Most Improved Player award and is a frontrunner for the Defensive Player of the Year award next season.

COACH MAXFIELD WINS JR. NBA/WNBA COMMUNITY COACH OF THE YEAR

Congrats to coach Juanesha "Nesha" Maxfield, who took home the 2024 National Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Community Coach of the Year award. Nominated by the Spurs, Coach Nesha was selected out of 10 finalists in recognition of her dedication to youth basketball. The NBA will provide a $2,000 grant for her youth basketball organization.

Coach Nesha has dedicated over 15 years to nurturing young athletes in Dime Box, a small town in Central Texas. She leads both the Texas Royal Horns Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team and Dime Box Youth Basketball Little Dribblers. As a coach, referee, and community barber, she’s established an influence that stretches beyond the court, incorporating leadership and teamwork principles and developing well-rounded individuals.

“Being named the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Community Coach of the Year is an amazing honor," Coach Nesha said in a release. “This award is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of my amazing players, their families and the entire Dime Box community. It takes a village, and I'm so grateful for the support system that allows our program to thrive.”
